Email & SMS Capture

The Problem

Users are only able to join the general mailing listand the only place where emails can be captured was in the footer.

This meant that the email capture was not customizable and could only gather emails onto one cnetralized list. There was no way for users to sign up to receive specific news about any one product or event using this system.

My Role

I was the design lead on this project and worked on the following areas:

  • Research: I performed a small comparitive review of other ecommerce site experiences
  • UX Design: High-level user journey strategy. Delivered final design, specs, and flow to developers
  • Tools: Sketch, Zeplin

Existing Experiences

Solution

First, I met with our stakeholders to understand what they were hoping for in terms of use throughout the site and types of mailing lists. Some limitaations were that this component needed to be reproducable in our CMS and needed to be flexible enough to accommodate images, the occasional SMS capture, legal language, and numerous error states.

After gathering acceptance criterea, I met with developers and email vendor to understand why our current capture system was not meeting these needs and what changes needed to be made on the backend to achieve our goals.

After mapping out the user flow when interacting with the module, I made a number of sketches of designs. After reviewing with stakeholders and iterating on the designs, I created pizel-perfect versions of every state on multiple breakpoints to the developer. I provided them with as much detail as possible and worked with them closely during the creation of the component in our pattern library and later in our CMS.
